There are some artists that are REALLY good at what they do. Their message blends with their lyrics and the flow mixes well with their production. Not many up and coming artists can master all four of those things with their music. Then there’s Mick Jenkins. While everyone is really high on Chance The Rapper, myself included, Mick has become my favorite artist from the Windy City right now. 2014’s The Water[s] is one of the best projects this decade and I’ll stand by that forever. Mick is preparing to drop his The Healing Component project later this month and serves an incredible video for his BADBADNOTGOOD produced “Drowning”.

Originally spotted on Fake Shore Drive, this song has everything you could want from an upcoming artist. The message is there, the flow is there, the production is funky, and his lyrics don’t miss. “When the real hold you down you supposed to drown right/wait wait, that don’t sound right” Mick spits in his baritone voice over the strumming of bass notes. There are social chants of “I can’t breathe” on this one as well, showing the layers of depth on this record. The video might be one of the best this year as Mick depicts a slave that was left for dead but ends up getting his revenge in the end. His project from last year was great but The Healing Component is on my anticipated albums list, which is a pretty short list as of now.
