I’m proud of the creativity I’ve seen in music videos recently. Artists are putting more thought into what they’re doing visually and letting directors use their creative minds to bring ideas to life in better and more thought out ways. I hope this is a trend that continues in hip-hop starting this year.
I wrote about Alfred Banks’ latest single at the beginning of the year and how it made me appreciate the relationship that I have with my own brother. While I’m still preparing to drop an interview I did with Banks about his upcoming tour, I wanted to shine some light on his latest video in the “Creative Videos Only” segment of JHMF.
When I first heard this record I knew Banks would go in this direction for the video (directed by Ghostmonster). I had no clue how it would look but I knew there would be a recreation of a funeral. What happens for “The Funeral of Orlandas Banks” is a celebration of his late brother’s life. All the attendees are dressed in black as is common but the vibe is a mixture of somber and happy emotions. The death of a loved one is one of the hardest things to swallow. You’re going to be filled with moments of grief and sadness but it’s important to remember that it’s one final time to celebrate that person’s life and what they meant to you. Banks, his friends, and family do that for Orlandas in the video.
Banks’ The Beautiful album was released yesterday and it zoomed to #12 on the iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap albums charts upon release. I have links to stream and purchase below so if you like the song and video, give his project a chance. You can also hear his music in the Netflix Original Burning Sands, a movie released earlier this month on the streaming platform.
