Summer is coming to an end and autumn is already upon us. Now is the perfect time to do a deep clean and organize your home, to prepare for the long hours you will be spending indoors. Cleaning expert Caroline Solomon shares her best tips for decluttering your space and making the most of this new season.
Say goodbye to old cables and electronic devices
In a TikTok video posted to his account @neat.caroline, Solomon recommends first getting rid of all the old cables, cords and electronic devices that are cluttering your space. This includes old phone chargers, broken video game consoles, or unused televisions. Once you get them back, it’s best to recycle them at Darty, according to Solomon. The retailer offers a recycling program, allowing you to recycle up to three items per household per day. If you have larger electronics, Darty also offers transportation or mail service for people who don’t live near a store.
Disassemble and recycle old cardboard boxes
Buying online is extremely convenient, but it often means you’ve accumulated numerous cardboard boxes in your garage or basement. Solomon advises taking advantage of fall to dismantle and recycle all those boxes. Not only will this free up space, but it will also prevent pests from finding refuge in your home when temperatures drop. Cockroaches lay their eggs in the cardboard boxes, termites eat them and rats and mice use them for warmth. By eliminating these boxes, you will therefore significantly reduce the risk of infestation.
Re-evaluate your wardrobe for fall
Remember when, as a child, you reorganized your wardrobe as the start of the school year approached? Well, the same principle applies to adult work clothes. During this time of seasonal transition, it’s the perfect time to re-evaluate your wardrobe and put aside the clothes you no longer wear. Solomon recommends donating these items to charities like Emmaus or the Red Cross. If some clothes still have value, you can also try selling them on online sales sites such as eBay or Le Bon Coin.
Make room for new items by getting rid of summer ones
In addition to focusing on moving forward with your wardrobe, you can also use this time to sort through items that have run their course this summer. Solomon suggests checking for broken or worn summer shoes that you can throw away or have repaired at a cobbler. Additionally, it’s important to review summer clothes you haven’t worn this season. Once again, you can donate them to associations or sell them.
Give your old towels a new life
Towels are another item to reevaluate as fall approaches, according to Solomon. She recommends gathering up your old, worn towels and donating them to an animal shelter. Ask your SPA to find out what they need.
By following Caroline Solomon’s advice, you can declutter your home and feel good in your new space. In addition to this, you will be able to give a second life to your unwanted objects. Take advantage of this seasonal transition to make room for new energies in your home.
